"When Governor Mike Rounds signed HB 1215 into law it effectively banned all abortions in the state with the exception that it did allow saving the mother’s life. There were, however, no exceptions for victims of rape or incest. His actions, and the comments of State Senators like Bill Napoli of Rapid City, SD, set of a maelstrom of protests within the state.
Napoli suggested that if it was a case of “simple rape,” there should be no thoughts of ending a pregnancy. Letters by the hundreds appeared in local newspapers, mostly written by women, challenging Napoli’s description of rape as “simple.” He has yet to explain satisfactorily what he meant by “simple rape.”
The President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Cecilia Fire Thunder, was incensed. A former nurse and healthcare giver she was very angry that a state body made up mostly of white males, would make such a stupid law against women.
“To me, it is now a question of sovereignty,” she said to me last week. “I will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction...”
Yesterday,
I called the Office of the President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of Pine Ridge, and spoke with Ms. Fire Thunder herself. (In case you haven't seen it, this is in reference to http://www.indianz.com/News/2006/01
If you want to mail donations to the reservation, you may do so at:
Oglala Sioux Tribe
ATTN: President Fire Thunder
P. O. Box 2070
Pine Ridge, SD 57770
OR: and this may be preferred, due to mail volume:
ATTN: PRESIDENT FIRE THUNDER
PO BOX 990
Martin, SD 57751
Enclose a letter voicing your support and explaining the purpose of the donation. Bear in mind, the Pine Ridge Res is not exactly dripping with disposeable income, so do consider donating funds directly to the tribe as well as specifically for this effort.
For email contact, you can contact the president at:
firethunder_president AT NOSPAM yahoo DOT com
cc:vbush AT NOSPAM oglala DOT org
That is Ms. Fire Thunder's personal email address; I have received permission to post it here. For the sake of record keeping, do cc: the listed address on all correspondence; that's her official secretary.
She was frankly kind of surprised that a white girl from Seattle was calling to express support, and even more surprised that the news had spread so far so fast. She's likely to get deluged with screaming hate mail soon, so get your support in fast. Send email with good thoughts if you can't send money.
ETA: Yes, please, dear God, link it anywhere and everywhere!
Lastly, I would point you to this cartoon, posted by
Here's some more contact information in case you have any pressing questions today. Or, as a woman, are just confused. Call him up! He can help!

Abortion on the "Rez"
Message: I think that opening and abortion clinic on the reservation is not a wise choice. I think it goes against what the Lakota "supposedly stand for". Family and Heritage. How many women whether they are Indian or not use abortion as a form of birth control? I am saddened and angered that Cecilia Firethunder would support such a sad option for women. Why doesn't she save the money for her own tribe of people to use for better drug and alcohol treatment programs. And to teach young people there on the reservation about responsibility and family values. How many people from the various Sioux tribe's have lost their children to homes shattered by alcohol abuse. How many children have been given up for adoption? Or placed in a system only to go right back into a home where they face the same problem over and over. Young girls to fall victim to incest or rape. Young boys who grow up not being able to overcome alcohol use and abuse and the abuse just gets passed on from one generation to the next. I come from the same reservation Mrs. Firethunder is the leader of. I came from the same background I just mentioned. Both my parents were alcoholic. All of us children were subjected to abuse and neglect. Being among the youngest of the nine children my mother bore. It gives me a relief to know she didn't have that option at her disposal when she went through hard times or I may not be here alive to testify that this is wrong!. And the tribe did everything it could to get me adopted by "Indian" people so I could "keep" some of my heritage. But that doesn't always work out either. They kept me from being adopted by a "white" family who could have raised me well. They would have been willing to have learned in order to teach us , but that's a whole other issue. I was rather adopted by a family whose father was only part Sioux. He was a alcoholic prior to adopting me and fell back into alcoholism 2 years after adopting me and my sister and I never learned anything about the Lakota Culture. Reservation life is hard enough. I know I lived there. Abortion isn't a choice...it's a cop out! It just allows women to be more irresponsible with their bodies and whats more,...irresponsible in Life! And I think Mrs Firethunders comments about the State Body being made up of mostly "white males" is racist and sexist.July 7 2006, 14:04:39 UTC 5 years ago
Re: Abortion on the "Rez"
Can't say I agree with you about abortion. I consider it a valid form of birth control. And moreover, I consider reproductive choice to be a core "family value." None the less, thank you for your comments.July 7 2006, 19:25:21 UTC 5 years ago
Re: Abortion on the "Rez"
Abortion is not birth control. In the same sense that it does not prevent one from becoming pregnant. It kills! The pill, depo. shot, IUD and the patch, condoms etc. all work with the idea of preventing conception. Abortion however does not. I consider reproductive choice one based on resposibility. Not something you do because you decide that You don't want someone who is already created and growing inside of you. I can only hope and pray the funds are never met and she changes her mind.July 13 2006, 14:24:56 UTC 5 years ago
Re: Abortion on the "Rez"
In the sense that abortion offers reproductive choice, it is birth control. I would agree that not getting pregnant in the first place would be ideal. But in order for women to have access to the pill, dep shot, IUD, patch, diaphram, and condoms - it's extremely helpful to have doctors that will provide them. And when said birth control doesn't work, and sometimes it doesn't, it's also good for women to have the choice of whether or not they will stay pregnant and have the baby. I believe that quite strongly, and that's why I support PP's mission.July 2 2007, 12:32:11 UTC 4 years ago
